Kilombero Sugar Company generates energy from bagasse (sugarcane residue), which is a source of clean renewable energy.
With the expansion project, KSCL will generate additional electricity and produce a total of 20MW of electricity to be used to operate the mills and part will be available for export to the National grid upon agreement.

Quantity of water abstracted is measured and recorded. It is compared with the allowed quantity as per the respective abstraction permit.
Water quality is measured daily at the downstream discharged point which contains K2 and K3 effluent. All other key outlet streams are monitored weekly.
KSCL through its Parks and Garden section in the Estate Support Services Department does mechanical removal of alien species such as Lantana Camara, an invasive plant that will often out-number other more desirable species, leading to a reduction in biodiversity.
Parks and Garden section at Agronomy also breed both indigenous/native species of tree seedlings which are either provided to the surrounding community or planted within the estate.
Note: The Manzese Forest has officially been declared as an estate conservation area and Parks and Garden are currently in the process of rehabilitating the area with the planting of indigenous trees. There is an intention to raise awareness by getting the local schools involved with “ADOPT AND PLANT A TREE PROGRAM” .
KSCL strives to increase yields by working with external stakeholders in various fields to mitigate impact of climate change. Strategies include minimum tillage for preserving soils, introduction of drip irrigation to reduce water usage, and introduction of chopper harvester to reduce carbon footprint caused by burning cane.
Transformation initiatives undertaken in 1998 resulted in increased sugar production from 29,500 tons on average per annum to 126,000.
